The explosion in use of the World-Wide Web, or Internet, through personal computers has had an important impact on many practicing physicians. The "Net" provides almost instantaneous availability of a wide range of information directly to the desk of a physician at any time of day or night and from anywhere in the world. It holds enormous potential for providing useful up-to-date practice guidelines, information on state-of-the-art conferences, journal contents, textbook chapters, and direct communication with other physicians and specialists, thereby expanding the depth and breadth of information available to the physician about the diagnosis and care of patients. The potential benefit of this medium for the practicing physician is enormous, and it behooves physicians to become familiar with the use of the Internet.
